If the nerve inside a tooth becomes affected by infection or decay, our Edmonton dentists will perform a root canal to repair it.
A root canal is a procedure where your dentist removes any decay, bacteria and nerves from your damaged tooth. Then, they will help restore tooth function by filling in the space with medicated dental materials.
After a tooth has emerged through the gums, the nerve's only function is to provide the sensation of hot or cold temperatures.
The absence of the nerve does not affect the function of the tooth, and sometimes its better to remove it.
When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue and can cause an infection inside the tooth. If the infected tissue is not removed, pain and swelling can result, and eventually your tooth may have to be removed.
Root canals are a relatively simple procedure involving one to three office visits to the dentist.
During treatment, your dentist will first remove the affected tissue. Next, the interior of the tooth will be cleaned and sealed. Finally, the tooth is filled with a dental filling.
If your tooth had extensive decay, your doctor may suggest placing a dental crown to strengthen and protect the tooth from breakage.
Signs you may need a root canal include: an abscess (or pimple) on the gums, sensitivity to hot and cold, severe toothache pain, swelling and/or tenderness. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your dentist right away.
