Uses for a Bone Graft

Bone grafts are typically recommended for patients with bone loss in their jaw. This procedure may be required to help:

• Strengthen the jaw to support a dental implant
• Regenerate bone lost to severe gum disease to prevent teeth from loosening or falling out
• Improve chewing, speech and digestion
• Restore or enhance facial tissues
• Rebuild the jaw before dentures are placed

After a Dental Bone Graft

Once the bone graft has been placed, your dentist will monitor your healing and recovery and let you know when your new bone is strong enough to support a dental implant.

Purpose of a Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is a bone grafting procedure in which your dentist adds bone material to the upper back jaw near the upper molars in preparation for a dental implant.

The amount of bone in the sinus area will be increased with a sinus lift, enabling your dentist to place the implant.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

The sinus membrane is moved upward or lifted to make room for the bone. To start, the dentist will make an incision into the gum tissue and raise it, exposing the bone beneath. 

After cutting a small circle in the bone, the dentist lifts the bony piece into the sinus cavity space and fills the hole with a bone graft. 

The incision is then closed and the healing process begins. You will come in for a follow-up check-in appointment within 7 to 10 days.
