Oral Examinations

Regular exams at your dental office give your dentist the opportunity to identify any dental health issues and make a plan to treat them. During the exam, your dentist will take a close look at your teeth, gums and bite. Exams may also include digital x-rays, oral cancer screening, and additional diagnostic procedures as needed.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your dentist has the skill and training to detect early signs of oral cancer and protect your oral health.

During the screening, they will use the VELscope oral screening device to closely examine the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Common signs of oral cancer include red patches and sores, leukoplakia (hardened white or gray lesions), and lumps.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a professional deep cleaning of your teeth. The hygienist will begin by using a scaler to loosen the tartar and plaque build-up between your teeth and along your gums. Finally, they with floss and polish your teeth to give you a fresh and clean smile.

Sheer White® Take Home Strips

One Sheer White application is included with your dental cleaning and should be applied at home on the same day.

Fluoride Treatment

Your cleaning may also include a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral used in dentistry to help rebuild the minerals in the enamel of your teeth to prevent or reverse tooth decay.

Brushing & Flossing at Home

Ideally, you should brush your teeth an hour after each meal using toothpaste that contains fluoride. Brushing alone isn't enough to completely clean your teeth. Using floss to complement brushing will ensure you properly clean your teeth and the spaces in between.
