Many people assume that there's nothing they can do to improve their smile. On the contrary, working out some key facial muscles actually can change how a smile appears on your face. Edmonton dentists at Azarko Dental Group have put together a list of three great exercises which you can use to exercise your facial muscles to better your smile. Anyone who feels that their smile isn't transmitting their feelings in quite the way they want can give these exercises a try.
Exercise #1 - The Whistle
Begin this exercise by pursing your lips as if you are about to whistle, only instead of leaving a small hole as you would when whistling, make sure you push your lips tightly together. As you tighten your lips and push them out more, you should feel a bit of tension in the surrounding facial muscles. Hold the pose for 10 seconds and do 10 repetitions at a time. After about one to two weeks you may notice a difference in how widely you are able to smile.
Exercise #2 - The Rabbit
"The Rabbit" is a great exercise for toning cheek muscles and improving smile flexibility and control. It can help to have a mirror handy while you give it a try, because the steps can be tricky to master at first.
Start by smiling as wide as you can while keeping your mouth closed. It can help to visualize that your smile is extending from ear to ear. While smiling, try wiggling your nose until you feel your cheek muscles engaging. Hold the pose for about five seconds, and repeat 10 times.
Exercise #3 - The Wide Smile
Unlike in the previous exercise, this time you want to smile as widely as you can with your lips open, holding the pose for at least 15 seconds and repeating 10 times. You'll know you're smiling widely enough if you feel some mild straining in your cheeks. If you don't feel anything, then try to smile a bit wider. As you continue this exercise over several days, you'll quickly notice an improvement in how wide you can smile.
Don't Forget That Your Teeth Are Important Too
The way your teeth look can play a big role in how you feel about your smile. Visiting your Edmonton dentist for regular checkups and cleanings will ensure that any unsightly plaque gets scraped away, allowing your pearly whites to shine. If you're struggling with deeper staining, then you can also opt for a professional teeth whitening.
