Why Teeth Sometimes Need to Be Extracted

A tooth extraction is an important dental procedure which needs to be performed if a tooth cannot be saved any other way. Edmonton dentists will typically avoid extracting teeth, trying other treatment methods where possible. Sometimes, however, they will have no choice but to extract the tooth. If a tooth that needs to be removed is left in place, it can cause extreme pain and lead to a dangerous infection. At Azarko Dental Group we provide tooth extractions at our Edmonton dental clinic for the following reasons.

- Tooth decay

Teeth often need to be extracted because of extensive tooth decay. In its earlier stages, tooth decay will typically be treated with fillings or crowns. An Edmonton dentist can even perform a root canal to save a tooth when the decay has reached the sensitive dental pulp in its roots. Sometimes, however, the infection is simply far too progressed and the tooth must be extracted in order to stop it from spreading.

- Tooth damage

Mild tooth damage can also be corrected at an Edmonton dental clinic, but a tooth which is too badly damaged will often need to be extracted, mainly to avoid the risk of infection. This is because, when a tooth is chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged, harmful bacteria will have much easier access to the dental pulp inside.

- Periodontal disease

Sometimes the problem lies with the gums rather than only with the teeth. Periodontal disease - a progressed form of gum disease - causes the gums to pull away from the teeth and develop pockets where bacteria thrive. The bacteria then begin to break down the connective tissue and bone which hold the teeth in place. If left untreated, periodontal disease will cause the teeth to become loose and to eventually require extraction.

- Crowded teeth

While issues of overcrowding can often be corrected by wearing braces, in some cases a tooth may have to be extracted in order to create the necessary space to bring the rest of the teeth into proper alignment. This usually occurs when there simply isn't enough space in the mouth for all of a patient's teeth.

- Impacted or infected wisdom teeth

Finally, one of the most common reasons for tooth extractions in young adults is to remove impacted or infected wisdom teeth. Due to their location in the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can easily become infected. Some people also lack the necessary space for wisdom teeth and can experience pain when the teeth are not able to properly erupt.
